Opened in 2016 by sisters Leah Koch and Bea Hodges-Koch, The Ripped Bodice was the first romance-only bookshop in the Northern Hemisphere, and it's still setting the standard nearly a decade later. Slow Burn Books — Marda Loop, Calgary 🇨🇦

Sisters Nicola and Shannon MacNaughton opened Slow Burn Books in 2023, perched above a wine bar (perfection), and they've packed a delicious  amount of romance into just over 200 square feet. Every subgenre is covered and the community is genuinely special. They host book signings, author talks, wine and cheese nights, and the kind of conversations that turn strangers into book club members. Tiny shop, enormous heart.

Hopeless Romantic Books — Toronto 🇨🇦

Welcome to the Barbie dream house of romance bookshops, darlings. Sisters Kearston Bergeron and Serena Goodchild's Queen Street West shop is unapologetically, head-to-toe pink with a rolling ladder, a checkout counter that hides a basement entrance, and a secret room that opens when you pull a specific book from the shelf. Carefully curated romance across every subgenre, from contemporary to hockey to queer to romantasy. Y2K nostalgia meets serious smut credibility. Heaven.

The Spicy Librarian — Leamington Spa 🇬🇧

Europe's biggest independent romance bookshop, no less, with over 2,500 titles in stock and a very specific focus on spicy romantasy and dark romance. Founder D was inspired by US indie romance shops and brought that energy back to Warwickshire with full force. Book Lovers Bookshop — Edinburgh 🇬🇧

Grump and Sunshine — Belfast, Maine 🇺🇸

The only romance-only bookshop in Maine and named after one of the best tropes in the genre, which is honestly all you need to know. Owner Cassidy Gintz built Grump and Sunshine as a no-judgement space where you can shop for books, vinyl, and toys without anyone raising an eyebrow. Books organised by genre and trope so you can find exactly what your soul is craving on any given Tuesday. Cosy, modern, and the owner's dog reportedly greets every visitor. Perfection.

Hardcovers — Mill Creek, Washington 🇺🇸

Hardcovers is doing something quietly brilliant in the Pacific Northwest: pairing an expansive collection of indie and special editions alongside the popular new releases everyone's feral for. Thoughtfully curated gifts, immersive events, unforgettable author experiences. Book Lovers — Bordeaux 🇫🇷

In the heart of Bordeaux, Célia, Agathe, and Maël run France's loveliest romance and romantasy haven–opened in June 2025 with 12,000 titles, including 2,000 in original English. Main Character Books — London 🇬🇧

Tucked into Spitalfields Market on London's East side, Main Character Books is the newest addition to the capital's growing romance scene, and darling, it's a delight. Owner Cassie and Comms Director Allie built this as a love letter to the romance community that got them through COVID, and the shop carries that warmth through every detail. They host an actual Smut Club, book release parties, and they live by a strict "if you like it, it's the book for you" rule. No yuck-ing of anyone's yum. Bliss.

Love Stories Bookshop — Cardiff 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Wales's very first brick-and-mortar romance bookshop, established 2025, nestled in the gorgeous Castle Arcade in Cardiff. Love Stories celebrates romance across every single sub-genre, with a focus on supporting independent, women-owned businesses alongside the books themselves. The Sinful Spine — Newcastle 🇬🇧

So hot it’s not even off the press yet, darling–at the time of writing, The Sinful Spine hasn’t announced its official 2026 open date yet, but what we do know is that it’s ticking all the right boxes.
